Many high school and college age students suffer from stress.
Students get stressed out about studying, finishing homework, and making a grade that pleases them as well as their parents.
While many say stress can be a good thing, I believe that stress is one of the worst things for a student. I say this because I am one of those students who is constantly stressed. I have lost sleep because of stress. I lost sleep not because I was studying, but because I could not stop fretting.
Psalm 37:1a says, “Do not fret,” and in verse 3, it says, “Trust in the Lord and do good.” These are verses I have to live by and constantly remind myself of. God does not want us to fret about something that’s temporary. He doesn’t want us to fret at all. So, instead, we can focus on doing good and distract ourselves from the stress. My best advice for people like me who deal with stress is to give it completely to the Lord.
The Bible also says in 1 Peter 5:7 to cast all your anxiety on Him for He cares for you.
We really have nothing to worry about. Why worry about tomorrow when today has worries of its own (Matthew 6:34)? We are not promised tomorrow, so why stress about it?
I have dealt with stress first- hand and have seen what it can do. Stress is very harmful to the body and overall well being. But because of the never-ending homework received, the hundreds of pages needing to be read, and the many papers that have to be written, in order to be prepared for the exam or essay, stress automatically creeps in. Our bodies feel over-worked or threatened, and so they release chemicals that are supposed to give us extra energy and protection but also can cause things in our bodies to shut down.
Our ability to think is one of those things that shuts down. I know when I stress and lose sleep, I cannot think as well the next day. I make more mistakes in my work. This proves to me that stress has a reverse effect.
Stress should not be part of one’s everyday life. It does not help one succeed. It is more harmful than helpful. Stress can take time away from something that could be more important than making a B on your next exam. Stress is a waste of energy.
A good way to deal with stress is to make time to get active. Take a break from the books or the computer screen and go for a walk. Spend time with friends and family. Stress does not need any more time from anyone.
College can be one of the most stressful times of life. But it doesn’t have to be. I think everyone should pray about their stress. Anyone can overcome stress with the help of the creator.
