The South Plains College men’s and women’s rodeo teams had a great showing as half of the team placed in the top 10 in the recent competition at Vernon College.
“We had 12 place back in the top 10,” said Kerry Doster, head coach of the rodeo teams.
On the men’s side, Colton Hancock finished in 10.2 seconds in calf roping in the long run and placed in a tie for 10th. In steer wrestling, Grady Egly finished in 7.5 seconds and placed seventh, while Hancock finished in 8.0 seconds in the long run and placed eighth.
Riley Hayes placed ninth in team roping with a time of 7.0 seconds in the long run. Sidney Stewart placed eighth in calf roping, including seventh in the long run in 20.8 seconds.
For the SPC women, Shay Spitz placed fifth in breakaway roping with a time of 2.9 seconds in the long run, earning 20 points in the overall standings. Spitz also placed third in barrel racing with a time of 17.19 in the long run and 17.11 in the short run, adding 30 points to the team tally. Rainy Robinson placed sixth in the same event, finishing in 17.33 seconds in the long run and 17.28 seconds in the short run.
Megan Burbridge placed sixth in breakaway roping with a time of 3.0 seconds, while Lindsey Sharp finished with a time of 3.2 seconds and placed in a tie for eighth in the same event.
Teryn Tate placed in a tie for sixth, with a time of 7.8 seconds in the short run of goat tying and finished in 8.6 seconds in the long run. Also, Kourtney McReynolds placed in a tie for sixth in the same event with a time of 7.8 seconds in the short run and 9.2 seconds in the long run. Both Tate and McReynolds added 2.5 points to the team tally. The Lady Texans placed third overall as a team with 187.5 points.
“We had a strong representation in the long run,” Doster said. “Half of the team placed in the top 10, and I’m pleased with the showing.”
The men’s and women’s rodeo teams traveled to Perryton to take part in the Frank Phillips College Rodeo on Oct. 8-Oct. 10. Results were not available at press time
“We hope that the break-away roping will be better, since there will be different calfs,” Doster said. “We are excited.”
