The South Plains College men’s and women’s track and field teams competed well against tough competition at home.

After three consecutive weeks traveling to face tough competition, the Texans looked well rested in their first home meet of the season on Feb. 19.

The Texans dominated the competition, with eight athletes finishing first in their respective events.

DeVante Lacy, who currently holds the second fastest time in the nation in the 400 meters, placed first overall in the men’s 600-meter race with a time of 1:20.17.

Kelvin Keter placed first in the 1,000-meters with a time of 2:29.59. Keter’s time at the SPC Invitational currently ranks as the second fastest time recorded in the NJCAA.

Nicholas Rotich tacked on another first-place finish in the men’s one-mile race with a time of 4:28.98

In the men’s 3,000-meter race, Omero Rodriguez’s time of 9:10.86 placed him first overall. Deric Martinez finished first in the men’s 5,000-meter race with a time of 15:41.71.

In the 60-meter hurdles, Robert Dunning took the top spot with a time of 7.97.

In the men’s field events, Justin Scott and Gabe Moore both recorded first-place finishes in their respective events. Moore placed first in the men’s shot put competition with a distance of 12.85 meters, while Scott placed first overall in the pole vault with a height of 14’-7.25.

Kwaume McGee and Fabian Edoki both impressed in the jump competitions, recording two more first-place finishes for the Texans.

McGee placed first overall in the men’s high jump with a height of 6-8. Edoki took the top spot in the long jump with a distance of 25-11.

In addition to their numerous first-place finishes, the men had many other standout performances at the meet.

Daniel Chan and Rodriguez both recorded top-10 performances in the 800-meter run finishing fourth and sixth, respectively, with times of 1:57.95 and 2:20.14.

Jose Silva placed second overall in the men’s 5,000 meters with a time of 16:13.38. Logan McBride placed second in the men’s shot put with a distance of 344.75.

Fletcher Sherrard placed second in the men’s triple jump with a distance of 47-1.5.

The SPC women were just as competitive at home, posting multiple first-place finishes of their own.

Aaliyah Telesford placed first overall in the women’s 60-meter dash with a time of 7.38. Telesford’s time is the second fastest time in the NJCAA this season.

In the 200 meters, Taylor Hill took the top spot with a time of 24.47.

Madinah Spencer had two first-place finishes posting a time of 55:09 in the 400-meter dash and a time of 8.85 in the 60-meter hurdles. Spencer currently holds the second fastest time in the NJCAA in the 400-meter dash, as well as the fifth fastest time for the 60-meter hurdles.

Falicia Frimpong performed well, placing first in the women’s long jump with a leap of 5.95 meters.

In the women’s pole vault, Morgan Hartsell placed first with a height of 3.55 meters.

In the pentathlon, Korie Melody placed first with 3,168 points.

The track teams now have 70 national-qualifying marks for this season. The teams were back in action at the NJCAA Indoor National Championship on March 4- March 5 in Winston Salem, N.C.
