Sophomores Shay Spitz and Kortney McReynolds carried the women’s rodeo team to a first-place finish strong showing at the Odessa Rodeo, while the men’s team had a solid showing at the Ranger College Rodeo.
The South Plains College men’s and women’s rodeo teams competed in the Odessa Rodeo, which was held on Feb. 27.
The SPC women placed first in the overall point standings with 310 points. All of the points were gained by Spitz, with 180 points, and McReynolds, with 130 points.
In the barrel racing event, Spitz posted a time of 15.02 seconds in the long run, and 14.9 seconds in the short run to finish first overall. McReynolds posted a time of 15.32 seconds in the long run, and 15.26 in the short run to finish fifth overall.
In the goat tying event, McReynolds posted a time of 7.4 seconds on the long run and 6.9 seconds on the short run to finish fourth overall.
The men’s rodeo teams failed to score any points in the overall standings at the Odessa Rodeo.
The South Plains College men’s and women’s teams also competed in the Ranger College Rodeo, which was held on March 17.
Then SPC women’s team scored a total of 10 points in the overall standings, all of
which were scored by Spitz.

In the barrel-racing event, Spitz posited a time of 17.7 seconds on the long run and 22.92 seconds in the short run.
The men’s rodeo team scored a total of 135 total points, with 80 points coming from Colton Hancock and 55 points gained by Cameron McCarley.
In the steer wrestling event, Hancock posted a time of 4.5 seconds on the long run and 100 seconds on the short run, to earning total of 80 points and a tie for fourth.
In the Tiedown Roping event, McCarley posted a time of 10.2 seconds on the long run and 10.8 seconds on the short run, finishing sixth overall.
