Patrick “Cinco” Boone is in the middle of his first coaching season at South Plains College. Boone joined the Texans as the head basketball coach last summer.
Coach Boone brings with him a vast knowledge of the game, along with more than 20 years of experience.
“I’ve just found a passion for when these guys are away from home for their first time… you can help them in a lot of different areas, not just basketball… their academic careers… and you kind of get to sit there and be a mentor to them,” Coach Boone said.
Boone grew up on a ranch in eastern New Mexico. When the job at SPC became available,he knew it was right for him.
“I’ve known about South Plains pretty much my entire life… the tradition of the program… the national championship banners… This was a chance to be a head coach again… get closer to family,” Coach Boone said.
Coach Boone sees the continued success of the SPC basketball program, and hopes to play a role in expanding that success. He also believes that fostering good values within the program starts with putting the athletes first.
“We want to coach them hard, but we want to love them hard,” Coach Boone said.
After dominating New Mexico Military Institute Monday at home, the Texans now hold a record of 20-5 and a conference record of 9-3. The ultimate goal for the Texans is, as always, to make a showing at the national tournament.
“ I think our best basketball is out there… we’re going to continue our accountability… have an energy and enthusiasm for one another… fight for that perfect game… and hopefully carry that into the postseason,” Coach Boone said.
The Texans will look to continue their win-streak Thursday on the road against New Mexico Junior College. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. To keep up with news about the SPC Texans, go online to spctexans.com
