The 58th annual Miss Caprock Scholarship Pageant will be held on Nov. 13 at 7 p.m. in the Tom T. Hall Production Studio in the Commercial Music Building on the Levelland campus at South Plains College. The pageant will feature students representing different campus clubs and organizations.
The winner of the scholarship pageant will receive a $750 scholarship from South Plains College, with the runner-up receiving a $500 scholarship.
Sharon Race, assistant professor of English and chairperson of the English Department, will host the pageant. Students from the Creative Arts Department will provide musical entertainment during the event.
“As people are coming in, there will be background music,” Ann Epps, director of student life, said. “This will help lead up to the excitement of the pageant.”
Once the event has begun, the mistress of ceremonies, Race, will present each nominee and the organization or club she represents.
“The first thing the contestants will do is model their after-5-wear,” Epps said. “When they come out, the MC will tell a little about them, such as why they came to SPC, and some interesting facts about them.”
Once the contestants return to the stage, they will be asked to give three words to best describe themselves, as well as what inspires them and what plans they have after attending SPC.
“After this portion of the pageant, there will be a short musical entertainment break,” Epps said. “Then, when they return, they will announce the top five contestants.”
After the top five contestants are announced, they will be asked a series of questions from the judges’ panel, which will determine who becomes Miss Caprock 2015.
The 14 contestants include:
Alexis Avitia, 19, will represent Phi Theta Kappa. She is a sophomore engineering major from Levelland. Avita is the daughter of Edward and Neima Avitia.
Emily Barraza, 19, will represent the Baptist Student Ministry. A freshman surgical technology major from Friona, Barraza is the daughter of Tony and Myrna Barraza.
Jaycee Caldwell, 18, will represent the Press Club and Plainsman Press. A freshman print journalism major from Idalou, Caldwell is the daughter of Luke and Melissa Dillard.
Sierra Garza, 18, will represent the SPC Texan Cheerleaders. A freshman pre-pharmacy major from Brownfield, Garza is the daughter of Clara and Gilbert Garza of Brownfield.
Melanie Fernandez, 22, is a member of the Student Government Association, Hispanic Student Organization and a campus ambassador. The daughter of Emily Volanos is a sophomore nursing major from Lubbock.
Sarai Hernandez, 21, will represent the Women’s Complex. She is the daughter of Juan and Claudia Hernandez of Perryton.
Maddie McGuffin, 18, will represent SPC TV. A freshman broadcast journalism major from San Angelo, McGuffin is the daughter of Roann McGuffin.
Baily Neatherlin, 19, will represent Campus Ambassadors. An elementary education major from Midland, Neatherlin is the daughter of Paul and Marcy Neatherlin.
Juana Sanchez, 18, will represent the Student Life Center. She is a freshman from Levelland. She is a member of the Hispanic Student Organization and Catholic Student Ministries. She is the daughter of Jaime and Patricia Sanchez.
Bonnie Smith, 20, will represent Smallwood Apartments. A sophomore biology/education major from Kerrville, Smith is a member of the SPC Texan Cheerleaders, the Biology Club and Raider Church. She is the daughter of Melinda Lockett.
Lorina Tarango, 18, will represent the Star Center. A freshman pre-pharmacy major from Levelland, Tarango is a member of the STAR Center, Student Government Association, the Hispanic Student Organization, Phi Theta Kappa and the Biology Club. She is the daughter of Maria Galindo and Joel Tarango.
Kristina Thorn, 18, will represent Lamar Hall. A freshman pre-pharmacy major from Sudan, Thorn is a member of the SPC Texan Cheerleaders. She is the daughter of Greg and Miranda Thorn.
Alisha Zamora, 19, will represent Stroud Hall. A freshman pre-nursing major from Brownfield, Zamora is a member of the SPC Texan Cheerleaders. She is the daughter of Sylvia and Tony Zamora.
Taylor Zarbano, 19, will represent the Student Government Association. A freshman public relations and biblical studies major from New Banded, Ill., Zarbano is a member of the Student Government Association. She is the daughter of Tony and Tammy Zarbano.
