Advertisements contribute to low self esteem

by: LINDSEY BLACKWOOD/Staff Writer

I feel that people tend to have very low self esteem.

I include myself with that. With everything that surrounds us now, it really isn’t a surprise.

People are constantly hounded with advertisements on television that are a promotion of makeup and skinny women, even people telling us that we aren’t good enough.  That tends to make us feel like we aren’t good enough, skinny enough, or even pretty enough.

I know, because I feel like that on a daily basis. I always tend to compare myself to everyone and everything, and it doesn’t help any that the advertisements on television  don’t make it any better.

The advertisements are always telling us that we need to buy a certain product to look good or fit in, or look a certain way to be beautiful and popular. But, in all honesty, those commercials and advertisements are completely wrong. You don’t need to look a certain way, or buy a certain product, to be beautiful. You are perfect the way you are.

Even though I struggle with that on a daily basis, it’s true. I feel like there is too much pressure to look a certain way and to have these products.  We feel like we are never good enough. If we don’t look a certain way or have a certain product, we aren’t good enough. Then there must be something horribly wrong with us.

We are perfect the way we are, and we tend to forget that. We get so caught up in trying to fit in and look a certain way that we tend to forget how awesome we really are.

Sometimes people just need to be told that they are perfect the way they are, and that they don’t need to change anything. It makes me sad when people don’t think they are good enough.

All you need to do is be you, and your beauty will shine. Who you are is good enough.

Even though you don’t feel good enough all the time, I promise that you are. Don’t let anyone, or any of those advertisements, tell you any differently.

I know that it isn’t easy, with everything that bombards us telling us that we aren’t good enough or that we need to be a certain size. But I promise you are so much more amazing than you give yourself credit for.

This is something I struggle with on a daily basis as well. But I can guarantee that if  you don’t let society’s standards tell you what to be and what to look like, you will feel a whole lot better about yourself.

Yes, there are still going to be days when you will feel terrible about yourself. But your self esteem and confidence will start to rise.
