Lady Texans building confidence early with strong start

The South Plains College women’s basketball team has made improvements during the early stages of the new season.

In the first game of the Lady Texan Classic, the Lady Texans downed Louisiana State University-Eunice, 65-43, on Nov. 6 for the second victory of the season. Yanina Inkina led the Lady Texans in scoring with 14 points, and she also grabbed five rebounds. Also contributing was Jasmyne Martin, who tallied 12 points while shooting 62 percent from the field.

SPC shot 86 percent from the foul line. Katie Lemieux from Louisiana State University-Eunice led all scorers in the contest with 20 points.

The Lady Texans led 34-20 at the end of the first half, with Inkina scoring six points to lead the team.

The second game of the Lady Texan Classic on Nov. 7 was much tighter, as the Lady Texans played in their first overtime game of the season and came away with a 60-54 victory after overcoming a 27-24 deficit at halftime.

Aliezza Brown led the scoring for the Lady Texans with 17 points. Martin and Inkina also scored in double figures, scoring 12 and 10 points, respectively.  Mia Cooper led the team in assists with five.

The Lady Texans shot 25 percent from the floor in the first half but was able to make adjustments to improve their shooting in the second half.

The Lady Texans started their first road games of the season with a 66-59 victory against Trinidad State Junior College on Nov. 13, but fell to Otero Junior College, 69-62, on Nov. 14. Both games were played at Trinidad State Junior College.

Through the first six games, the Lady Texans are averaging about 70 points and have allowed about 58 points per game. The defense is ranked third in the National Junior College Athletic Association Region V.

After winning just nine games last season, the Lady Texans were off to a 4-2 start through the first six games.

The Lady Texans returned to the court for three consecutive days, as they took on Southwest Junior College on Nov. 19, Dallas Diesel on Nov. 20 and Temple College on Nov. 21, with all three games held in Snyder.  Results were not available at press time.
