Austin Via Gomez and Sky Rojas were recently crowned Homecoming King and Queen for South Plains College.
“It’s an honor,” said Via Gomez, a sophomore from Spur, who was representing Campus Ambassadors. “I didn’t expect us to win as a pair.”
The crowning ceremony was held during halftime of the women’s basketball game against Odessa College on Feb. 4 at Texan Dome.
“I’m happy to win together because we were nominated together,” said Rojas, a sophomore from Littlefield who also was representing the Campus Ambassadors.
Prior to the homecoming, voting was held in the Student Center across from the bookstore. Any student enrolled at SPC was allowed to vote.
The other nominees included: Mallory Carver, of Lovington, N.M. and Matt Molinar of Levelland, representing Plainsman Press and Press Club; Nancy Munoz of Levelland and Tito Contreras of Guthrie, representing Star Center; Hollye Shearer of Hobbs N.M. and Andrew Palomin of Lockney, representing Student Government Association; Nicholas Whisner of Lubbock, representing Southwest Residence Hall; Sarai Hernandez of Perryton and James Salzman of Leander, representing Student Housing; Thalia Ramos of Lubbock and Eric Lopez of Olton, representing Hispanic Student Organization; Kaedan Garrison of Childress and Cristien Holguin of Temple, representing Residence Hall Association; Juana Sanchez of Levelland and Emmanuel Dominguez of Brownfield, representing Student Life; Alanna Krueger of Lubbock, representing Texan Cheerleaders; and Devante Lacy of Houston, representing the Women’s Complex.
“It feels like an honor,” Salzman said. “I’m glad to be on the Homecoming court.”
Other nominees on the court such as Carver and Holguin said that being nominated is exciting and amazing.
“It’s really awesome,” said Ramos. “I love representing our organization.”
Going into halftime, door prizes were announced first while the nominees for the court gathered near the side of the basketball court. Lining up across the basketball court, each pair of nominees was announced with a short description of what their major is and their hometown.
“I think this Homecoming turned out great,” said Ann Epps, director of student life. “We had a wonderful group of candidates, and they were beautiful, phenomenal group and we’re really proud of them.”
Homecoming is an essential part of the college tradition and student life at SPC. Every year, there are activities and events such as a door, office, and hall-decorating contest.
“Homecoming gives the students a wonderful chance to get out of their comfort zone and a chance to see what the SPC spirit is all about,” Epps said.
Epps added that Homecoming also serves the purpose to help support the Texans and Lady Texans.
Each year, Homecoming has a different theme. Epps encourages students to get involved with Student Life and welcomes any ideas that students may have.
