Aquarium, Adventure Park coming to Lubbock

by ALEX PEREZ//Feature Editor

New attractions coming soon will make it hard to say, “There is nothing to do in Lubbock.”

Kai and Jim Evans are bringing new attractions sure to entertain audiences of all ages. Plans for the Lubbock Aquarium, as well as a new entertainment venue, Adventure Park, were unveiled on Sept. 14, 2016, during a news conference at the Lubbock Chamber of Commerce.

Adventure Park will be located just north of the aquarium, at the site where Putt Putt Golf and Games used to stand.

The new Aquarium will be a non-profit organization and will be operated on donations from the community, making it entirely a community project. Evans says she is grateful for the community’s help with the project.

It is projected to cover 25,000 square feet on two acres of donated land, complete with indoor and outdoor exhibits. Kai Evans says the exhibits are still being determined, but it is expected to include stingrays, river otters, and an alligator exhibit, as well as lots of animals found in the ocean and “animals you typically don’t see in the area,” according to Evans.

Being a non-profit organization, Evans promotes donations in order to meet with consultants to determine more wildlife to be included in the exhibits, along with a restaurant and other attractions in the Aquarium.

Donations given to the organization will be used to begin construction, as well as hire more consultants to not only determine the opening date but also the types of exhibits that will be featured at the Lubbock Aquarium.

Donations can be given by going online to lubbockaquarium.org and clicking on the clownfish, or scroll to the bottom of the page and click on the donate section to enter your information and amount.

The Evans’ are also working on Adventure Park, a family-oriented venue that is sure to attract lots of fun seekers. The new attraction will cover 14,000 square feet of land and will include a 9,500-square-foot building packed with a thrilling laser tag course, arcade and new restaurant.

Anybody can visit adventureparklubbock.com and enter fun and creative names for a menu item, and it might be picked to be on the new menu for the restaurant included in Adventure Park.

According to Evans, Adventure Park will also have bumper boats, two 18-hole miniature golf courses, and a go-kart track, as well as a ropes course and zip lines going across nearby lakes.

They have already begun construction on Adventure Park, and construction for the Lubbock Aquarium will begin after meeting with consultants.

The grand opening for Adventure Park will be some time in the winter of 2017, but a date hasn’t been set for the Lubbock Aquarium.

Evans says she is “extremely excited” about the new attractions.
