Rodeo teams fare well in Alpine, ENMU competition

The South Plains College rodeo teams have started the fall season with two strong showings.

The SPC men’s and women’s rodeo teams competed in the Sul Ross State University Rodeo, which took place on Sept. 22- Sept. 24.

The SPC women finished in the standings with 192.5 points. All of the points were earned by sophomore Rainy Robinson, with 145 points, and Baylee Henderson, with 40 points.

In the Barrel Racing event, Robinson posted a time of 16.38 seconds in the long run, and 16.24 seconds in the short run, which earned her a tie for first.  Mackayla McRae posted a time of 16.65 seconds in the long run and 16.65 seconds in the short run, failing to earn any points.

In the Goat Tying event, Henderson posted a time of 7.3 seconds in the long run and 7.9 seconds in the short run, earning 40 points in the event. Megan Burbidge posted a time of 7.4 seconds in the long run and 8.1 seconds in the short run, failing to earn any points.

In the Breakaway roping event, Avery Gonzales posted a time of 2.9 seconds in the long run and 4.7 seconds in the short run, earning 7.5 points.

Among those competing for the SPC men was Chet Boren, who earned 95 points.

In the Steer wrestling event, Boren posted a time of 6.2 seconds in the long run and 5.1 seconds in the short run.

The men’s and women’s rodeo teams also competed in the Eastern New Mexico University Rodeo in Portales, New Mexico, which was held Sept. 15 – Sept. 17.

The SPC women finished in the standings with 85 points. All of the points were earned by freshman Avery Gonzales, with 55 points, and freshman Alex Odle, with 30 points.

In Breakaway Roping, Gonzales posted a time of 2.4 seconds in the long run and 3.8 seconds in the short run to finish in fifth place.

In the Barrel Racing event, Odle posted a time of 17.96 seconds in the long run and 22.79 seconds in the short run to finish sixth.

In goat tying, Henderson posted a time of 8.9 seconds in the long run and 16.2 seconds in the short run, but failed to earn points.

The SPC men’s team also earned 330 points at the ENMU rodeo, led by sophomore Coy Surrett, who scored 120 points.    

In Tiedown roping, Surrett posted a time of 9.2 seconds in the long run and 9.8 seconds in the short run, placing second.

In steer wrestling, Boren posted a time of 5.6 seconds in the long run and 8.1 seconds in the short run, earning 85 points and placing fifth. Freshman Chase Wilson posted a time of 6.1 seconds in the long run and 10.2 seconds in the short run, earning 20 points and finishing ninth.

In the team roping, sophomore Hadley Cloward and freshman Rylie Hayes posted a time of 8.1 seconds in the long run and 13.2 seconds in the short run, earning 105 points and placing second.
