Law Enforcement Club seeking food bank donations as holiday season approaches
As the holiday season draws nearer, one South Plains College organization is hoping to make the lives of some of the less fortunate families in the Levelland area easier.
The Annual Blue Line Food Drive, sponsored by the Law Enforcment Club, is being held until Nov. 16. They are actively seeking food donations for those in need. All donations benefit the Hockley County Food Box, the local food bank located in Levelland.
“The Law Enforcement Club has conducted a food drive for several years, and it is important to us that we contribute to the community that is home to South Plains College,” said Dr. Lance Scott, law enforcement technology instructor.
This year’s goal has been set at 2,205 pounds of food, equaling one metric tone of food, according to Dr. Scott. Although this may seem like a large amount of food, it is not unreasonable. In last year’s food drive, the Law Enforcement Club collected 2,300 pounds of food, allowing many in the area to have a means to provide for their family for the holidays.
Providing food to families in need during this holiday season is not the only goal of the food drive. It also presents a unique learning experience for students participating in the Law Enforcement Club, according to Dr. Scott.
“Our students are typically going to work in a field concerned with helping people,” said Dr. Scott. “The food drive gives our students the opportunity to contribute to the community and help people in need.”
The Law Enforcement Club would greatly appreciate any donations of canned food or non-perishable food items. Donations can be brought to the Law Enforcement Technology Building.
“We typically make the delivery to the Food Box prior to Thanksgiving, because they are usually experiencing an influx of people in need of food during the holiday season,” Dr. Scott said. “Our contribution helps to offset this influx.”
