When trouble threatens the Marvel universe, there is always someone to save the day. This time it is up to Luke Cage to protect the streets of Harlem.
The story of “Luke Cage” is another installment in the marvel universe. Like another Netflix show, “Daredevil,” it is up to a vigilante to save the streets of New York from a crime boss who threatens the city’s safety. This also takes place after his failed relationship with Jessica Jones.
The story starts out when Cage, who just got out of prison, is working two jobs to try to make a new life for himself in Harlem. One job is a dishwasher for a club owned by one of the main villains in the show, Cornell “Cottonmouth” Stokes, and another is working for a man known as “Pops” who everyone on the streets has major respect for. Pops owns a barbershop that all of the crime bosses know that is neutral in all of the gang wars.
With crime being rampant in the streets of Harlem, Pops believes that Cage can go out and clean up the streets. Pops is one of the few people who knows of Cage’s abilities of super strength and seemingly unbreakable skin. But Cage is reluctant to use his power. He simply wants to live a quiet life.
All around him, the city of Harlem is sinking into chaos, with crime being controlled by Cottonmouth and his cousin, Mariah Dillard, a local councilman. They are working to get the city under their control. Cottonmouth works alongside Hernan “Shades” Alvarez, who was sent by the main villain, Diamondback, to make sure that his plans for Cage and the city go smoothly.
As the main plot advances, Cage starts to get involved in the crime that is taking over Harlem. The show has many great action scenes showing off Cage’s impressive strength and his super strong skin. As the season progresses, it shows what limits Cage has, while bringing up classic stories from past Marvel movies.
While the show has a lot of action, it also has a great plot that shows Cage’s past and present experiences. As the show progress Cage has to face his past demons that have come to threaten the city he loves.
The show does a good job of keeping up with the Marvel Netflix shows, as characters from “Daredevil” and “Jessica Jones” make an appearance throughout the show. While it does keep up the Marvel universe, it also does a good job of explaining all of the details for those who are new to the Netfilx shows or the Marvel movies. Through out the show, you are able to enjoy the progression of Cage’s character without having seen any of the other TV shows.
Overall, the story follows the life of Cage, with plenty of action and plot twists that will leave the viewer wondering what will happen next. It is another great addition to the Marvel universe. I give “Luke Cage” 5 out of 5 stars.
