Texans capture regional title with perfect score

The South Plains College men’s and women’s cross country teams had a great performance at their regional championship meet. 

The teams competed in the National Junior Collegiate Athletic Association Region V Championship held Oct. 29 at Harry McAdams Park in Hobbs, N.M.

The SPC men’s team finished first in the event, placing six runners in the top 10, and scoring 15 points, a perfect score, by sweeping the first five places.

Sophomore Felix Kosgei placed first with a time of 24:18, while sophomore Omero Rodriguez placed second with a time of 24:29. Sophomore Jose Silva placed third with a time of 25:30.

Rounding out the top 10 were sophomore Deric Martinez, who placed fourth with a time of 25:35, and sophomore Connor Hughes, who placed fifth with a time of 26:25. Sophomore Nicholas Rotich placed eighth with a time of 26:36.

Freshman Leo Michel finished 11th with a time of 26:56.

The SPC women’s cross country team also had a good showing at the NJCAA Region V Championship, placing second with 50 points.

Freshman Seselia Dala placed fourth with a time of 19:02, while freshman Leslie Romero placed fifth with a time of 19:15. Sophomore Poro Gahekave placed seventh with a time of 19:36.

Freshman Caitlyn Mercer finished 23rd with a time of 22:18, while freshman Jasmine Campos finished 26th with a time of 22:42.

Freshman Latriceia Smith finished 28th with a time of 23:13, while freshman Lydia Mancillas finished 29th with a time 23:29.

The SPC cross country teams also competed at the NJCAA Cross Country Championships on Nov. 12 in El Dorado, Kansas.
