Gaming industry creates high expectations for new year

So far, 2017 is showing promise for the gaming community. An innovative console has been announced, new intellectual properties are being introduced to gamers, as well as several beloved series returning to consoles.

The biggest release coming this year is the Nintendo Switch. On Oct. 20 Nintendo released a trailer for their new console, the Switch, and it blew the minds of all gamers. The Nintendo Switch is a portable console that can slide into a dock at your house and is then displayed on your television.

This is the first all in one home and portable console that has the capacity of a home console. The controller(s) or Joy-Con(s) slide onto either side of the Switch when it’s in portable mode, and slide onto the Joy-Con grip to make a regularly-shaped controller. The Joy-Cons can also be used similarly to the Nintendo Wii remote for games that use motion sense, like Nintendo’s new game, “Arms.”

If that name doesn’t give it away, “Arms” is a somewhat underwhelming game where two players basically use the Joy-Con controllers to throw punches with extending, mechanical arms. But aside from “Arms,” there will be many other games available on the Switch when it releases on March 3.

“The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild” is probably one of the most anticipated games for the Switch, and it shows promise. In “Breath of the Wild” the player takes control of Link to go on an open-world action adventure. “Breath of the Wild” will be available on March 3 on the Wii U and the Nintendo Switch.

One game that I’m ecstatic about is “Prey,” a new first-person action/adventure game. “Prey” is an open-world game that takes place on what looks like an abandoned commercial space station. The player will be able to explore outside of the space station, but not without a fight inside of it. There will be different forms of aliens in “Prey” but the ones that have been displayed the most are small, black, creepy crawlers that can shape-shift into objects like chairs and trash cans.

The player will take control of Morgan Yu, a man or a woman, that can somehow take advantage of the same shape-shifting and other powers that the aliens have. “Prey” is set to release on May 5 on the Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PC, and, hopefully, the Nintendo Switch.

The next game I’m thrilled for this year is “Assassin’s Creed Empire,” the 15th game in the series. “Assassin’s Creed” is a third-person, open-world, action/adventure game that takes players to different eras of history around the world.

The first “Assassin’s Creed” game was released in 2007 and it took place in Jerusalem and a few other surrounding areas during the Third Crusade. Since then, players have visited the American Civil War, the Golden Age of Piracy, the Italian Renaissance, and other settings with historical significance.

Assassin’s Creed Empire will take place in Egypt, a location that many have been wanting the games to go for a long time. The last two games in the series haven’t been the best but Ubisoft decided to break stride and take two years instead of one to develop “Empire,” which has many gamers expecting a wonderful and polished experience.

Although 2017 doesn’t seem to be too action-packed, it does promise a few intriguing games and a revolutionary console for gamers to look forward to.
