The South Plains College men’s and women’s track and field teams had great performances recently against top-tier athletes.
The teams competed in the Tyson Invitational at the University of Arkansas on Feb. 10.
In the men’s 800-meter run, freshman Felix Kosgei placed 16th with a time of 1:59.40, while freshman Montel Hood placed 17th with a time of 2:02.30.
In the 3,000-meter run, sophomore Omero Rodriguez placed fourth with a time of 8:32.56.
In the 5,000-meter run, Kosgei placed fourth with a time of 15:05.63, and sophomore Nicholas Rotich placed seventh with a time of 16:06.85.
In the 4 x 400 relay, freshman Rayan Holmes, freshman Junior Charles, sophomore Okeen Williams and Hood placed seventh with a time of 3:10.98.
In the high jump, sophomore Kwaume McGee placed ninth with a jump of 2.04 meters.
In the long jump, sophomore Saahir Bethea placed sixth with a jump of 7.36 meters, and sophomore Derrick Monroe finished 16th with a jump of 7.08 meters.
In the Long Jump Invitational, freshman Laquan Nairn placed fourth with a jump of 7.8 meters, which set a SPC record.
In women’s competition, freshman Natassha McDonald finished 20th in the 400-meter run with a time of 55.30, and sophomore Mauricia Prieto finished 40th with a time of 56.76.
In the 800-meter run, freshman Hellen Maasotuo placed sixth with a time of 2:15.63 which is the fastest time in the NJCAA this season, and sophomore Latriciea Smith finished ninth with a time of 2:17.33
In the 5,000-meter run, freshman Seselia Dala placed first with a time of 17:45.87, while freshman Leslie Romero placed third with a time of 18:20.84.
In the triple jump, sophomore Felicia Frimpong finished 15th with a jump of 11.7 meters.
In the shot put, Kiona Bradshaw finished 11th with a throw of 14.32 meters.
The SPC track teams also competed in the Charlie Thomas Invitational in the Gilliam Indoor Track Stadium at Texas A&M University on Feb. 3.
The men’s teams placed third overall with 72 points, while the women’s team placed ninth with 20 points.
In the men’s 200-meter dash, freshman Jordan Atkinson finished 11th with a time of 21.61, while Williams finished 14th with a time of 21.79 and freshman Mason Weh finished 21st with a time of 22.12.
In the men’s 400-meter dash, Atkinson placed ninth with a time of 48.12, while Hood finished 16th with a time of 48.64 and Charles finished 17th with a time of 48.91.
In the mile run, Rodriguez finsihed 13th with a time of 4:19.30, while Kosgei finished 14th with a time of 4:19.38 and sophomore Deric Martinez finished 20th with a time of 4:31.36.
In the 5,000-meter run, sophomore Jose Silva placed seventh with a time of 15:17.84, while Martinez placed eighth with a time of 15:31.93 and sophomore Connor Hughes placed ninth with a time of 15:40.72.
In the 60-meter hurdles, sophomore Robert Dunning placed second with a time of 8.02, while freshman William Watson placed third with a time of 8.17 and Weh placed fifth with a time of 8.19.
In the high jump, McGee placed second with a jump of 2.11 meters, and Dunning placed seventh with a jump of 2 meters.
In the long jump, Nairn placed first with a jump of 7.66 meters, while Bethea placed second with a jump of 7.33 meters and Monroe placed fourth with a jump of 7.27 meters.
In the triple jump, Bethea placed first with a jump of 14.31 meters.
In the women’s 400-meter dash, freshman Agnes Abrocquah finished 15th with a time of 56.59, while sophomore Kadrienne Sanders placed 21st with a time of 59.31.
In the 800-meter run, Smith finished 13th with a time of 2:20.96, while Maasotuo placed 15th with a run of 2:21.89 and freshman Ashley Huhges placed 20th with a time of 2:35.72.
In the 4×400-meter relay, the team of freshman Safia Bright, Prieto, McDonald and Abrocquah placed eighth with a time of 2.46.60.
In the long jump, Frimpong placed fourth with a jump of 5.71 meters, while sophomore Melody Korie placed sixth with a jump of 5.61 meters.
