Nancy Muñoz and Trenton Jones recently were crowned Homecoming Queen and King for South Plains College.

“It is so surreal,” said Jones, a sophomore from Levelland, who was representing Intramural Sports. “I did not think I was going to win, honestly.”

Homecoming King and Queen winners were announced during halftime of the Lady Texans basketball game against Western Texas College on March 2 at the Texan Dome.

Other nominees for King and Queen were: Alexandria Perez and Riley Golden, representing the Press Club and Plainsman Press; Adeva Jennings and Juan Pena, representing the Ballroom Dance Team; Kristina Thorn and Trenton Jones, representing SPC Intramural Sports; Alisha Zamora and Tharon Woodard, representing SPC Student Life; Nancy Muñoz and Marcelo Rodriguez Jr., representing Campus Ambassadors; Shelby Cerda and Mark Saldana, representing SPC PTA; and Samantha Escobar and Tito Contreras, representing the Star Center Student Organization.

“I love Campus Ambassadors,” Muñoz said. “It was great to be a representative of the campus and the organization.”

To run for Homecoming Queen and King, students are nominated by fellow members in their respective organizations.

“I won MVP [in intramural sports] last semester,” said Jones, “so when they asked if I could represent them, I couldn’t say no.”

Though the winners were paired with someone else, Muñoz and Jones are not strangers.

“We graduated (from high school) together,” said Jones, “so it is really cool we won together.”

The King and Queen were chosen by the number of votes they received from the student body. This year, voting was held in the Student Center. Any student enrolled at SPC was eligible to vote.

Students and staff were offered an opportunity to participate during Homecoming week by designating each day of the week a different theme: Monday was “Put WTC to Sleep” (pajama day); Tuesday was “Throw Some Shade at WTC” (hat day); Wednesday was “Boot Out WTC” (cowboy boots day); and Thursday was “Game Day.”
