Texans add two victories during final home games

The South Plains College men’s basketball team closed out the final two home games of the season with dominating victories.

The Texans eviscerated Clarendon College 107-72 on Feb. 25 at Texan Dome. With the victory, SPC moved to 23-4 on the year and and 12-3 in Western Junior College Athletic Conference play.

IMG_0766.JPGSPC struggled midway through the first half, allowing the Bulldogs to lead by as many as four points at the 9:57 mark.

However, the Texans found their stride, utilizing a 31-8 run during the next 10 minutes, leading by 21 points going into halftime. SPC would not relinquish the lead during the next 20 minutes, leading by as many as 38 points.

Sophomore Deon Barett poured in 22 points, three rebounds, four assists and five steals. He knocked down eight of his 15 shots from the floor and was 6-for-11 from behind the three-point arch. Sophomore Chris Orlina scored 21 points off the bench on 6-for-10 shooting from the field. He also had five assists, two steals and nine rebounds.

Sharp shooter Jonah Antonio dropped in 18 points from behind the arch, to go along with his five rebounds and two assists. Sophomore Trey Wade put up 12 points on 6-for-10 shooting from the field. He also added eight rebounds and two blocks.

Sophomore Charles Jennings chipped in 16 points off the bench, hitting five of his 11 shots from the field. He also contributed six rebounds and two assists. Sophomore Gaige Prim scored seven points on 2-for-3 shooting from the floor, while sophomore Koray Gilbert added five points on 2-for-3 shooting from the field, including a 3-pointer.   

The Texans secured a 98-68 victory against Western Texas College on Feb. 18 at Texan Dome.

With the victory, SPC improved to 22-4 on the year and 11-3 in conference play.

The Texans set the tone in the first half with a 32-8 run during the first 12 minutes of play to get an early lead on the Westerners.

SPC didn’t relinquish the lead once in the contest, inflating their cushion to as many as 40 points at the 10:01 mark of the second half.

Prim led all scorers with 26 points on 12-of-13 shooting from the field. He also grabbed eight rebounds and two steals. Orlina shot 7-for-9 from the field, including one from the three-point line. He also grabbed 10 rebounds and 17 points, posting a double-double.

Jennings tallied 15 points on 4-of-7 shooting from the field, including one three-pointer and six free-throws, to go along with three rebounds.

Wade posted 13 points on 6-of-9 shooting from the floor. He also had five rebounds. Antonio added nine points, while Wilson added four. Antonio hit three field goals, including two 3-pointers.

SPC shot 75 percent from the field in the first half, while holding WTC to just 39.3 percent shooting from the field. The Texans also out-rebounded the Westerners 33-17 for the contest.

The Texans attempted to secure a share of the WJCAC championship on Feb. 28 against Odessa College in the final game of the regular season. Results were not available at press time.
