The South Plains College men’s and women’s indoor track and field teams closed out the regular season by winning four event titles at the Texas Tech Matador Qualifier on Feb. 15 at the Sports Performance Center on the campus of Texas Tech University.
In the men’s long jump, sophomore Holland Martin placed fist with a jump of 23 feet, 0.5 inches on his fifth attempt. Martin also placed first in the men’s triple jump with a leap of 50 feet, 5.25 inches.
In the men’s high jump, sophomore Byrson Deberry placed second, clearing the bar at 6 feet, 9.75 inches, while sophomore Asani Hylton placed third after clearing 6 feet, 9.25 inches.
Sophomore Deion Lightfoot placed first in the men’s 60-meter hurdles, posting a time of 8.05. Freshman Decoven Young placed third in the event with a time of 8.43.
In the men’s 3,000-meter run, freshman Alex Kitum placed second with a time of 8:54.66. Sophomore Filmon Beyene posted a time of 9:03.71, good enough for fifth place in the event. In the men’s mile run, Jesse Madrid placed second with a time of 4:32.32.
In the men’s 4×400 relays, sophomore Willari Watson, Hylton, Martin and freshman Japhet Toroitich placed third with a time of 3:20.49.
Freshman Dorcus Ewoi placed first in the women’s 3,000-meter run with a time of 10:32.88. In the women’s mile run, freshman Nyia Sena placed fifth, posting a time of 5:38.33.
In the women’s 600-meter run, sophomore Janiel Moore posted a time of 1:37.08, good enough for third place. Freshman Itzel Garcia-Santos finished eighth with a time of 1:41.13.
In the women’s 4×400 meter relay, Moore, freshman Elon’a Jones, Hanah Mills, and Garcia Santos posted a time of 3:58.79, good enough for second place.
In the women’s long jump, Jones placed third with a jump of 18 feet, 3 inches.
The teams concluded the indoor season at the 2019 NJCAA Indoor National Championships on March 1 in Pittsburg, Kansas. Results were not available at press time.
