This year’s Miss Caprock Contest has been postponed for the first time ever.

The pageant that has continually gone on for 62 years has been postponed this year due to COVID-19. This was set to be the 63rd annual event, with the winner receiving a $750 SPC scholarship and the first runner-up receiving a $500 SPC scholarship.

Crystal Cisneros, administrative assistant for Student Life at SPC, explained how the event is set up and functions. The event is set up where SPC student contestants are judged on personal presentation, poise, and knowledge of current events. The contestants must have a 2.5 or higher GPA and must be nominated by their campus organizations or clubs. Before the event begins, each contestant will have a 15-minute interview and have a photo taken backstage.

Each contestant also models for the pageant, with looks such as a “ After Five look” which would be considered business casual. There is also an evening gown portion, which is a more nicer style of clothing.

The contestant will also be asked an open-ended questions on stage to demonstrate their knowledge on current events. The event also has a Junior Miss Caprock portion of the show, with a younger Miss Caprock joining on the stage.

The judges for the event are chosen from vast audiences, such as a member of the community, and a member of the faculty. The event is brought together by Student Life, the Creative Arts Department, the Sound Technology Program, and all staff at the Tom T. Hall Studio.

“We want to make sure everyone involved is safe, and to still have a great time,” says Cisneros.

The rescheduling date for the pageant is still being determined and will be announced when it is safe to continue with the event. Due to the pandemic, Student Life is working tirelessly to make sure everyone who is involved will stay safe and also have a good time.
