Choosing a major is hard, but choosing one that stands the test of time is nearly impossible.

Maybe you have an idea of what you want to do. But will your dream job be around 20, 10, or even five years from now? It is difficult to know, but there are many degrees with promising futures.

So why should you get a college degree? While you may have a career without one, you most certainly won’t regret getting one. With a competitive job market, it will help you stand out from others. It will increase job opportunities and build self-confidence. Most importantly, you will potentially get higher earnings.

A career field that has been around for centuries is Human Resources. In the last couple of years, technology has taken over how companies deal with employees. But thankfully, the human side is still needed. The only difference is, the need to learn remote work management, and to be more efficient in technology software and data analysis.

Another career needed is nursing. People are living longer, but also more illnesses and pandemics are popping up, such as COVID-19. Because of this, more nurses are needed to take care of the population. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics jobs for nurses will increase 7 percent within the next 10 years.

Business majors are able to take many different paths. Using a little imagination and creativity, the possibilities are endless. From finance and marketing, to starting your own business, this degree can be used in many ways. A business degree is so broad, as it teaches you leadership and managerial skills that can be used in many roles, not only in a working environment, but in life. The versatility of this field means it is expected to grow 5 percent in the upcoming years. After all, business is all around us.

It is no secret that the world is becoming increasingly dependent on technology. The need for cybersecurity no doubt will continue to increase. From coding to software development, a Cybersecurity major should have no trouble finding a job. People in this field usually work for a well-known business or even the government.

Economics is a major with a variety of job options in several different fields.  Unlike other degrees, this integrates well with the changing world we live in. There will always be a need for people with critical thinking and problem-solving skills. These skills work well with jobs in policy, healthcare, real estate and others such as a financial planner or accountant.

A more laid back and fun degree is Game Design. If you love video games, this a degree that would be perfect for you. Even though this a new college major, it has a promising future. As the need for game developers rises, the opportunities will rise with it. This career will take you from creating video games and apps to art design.

Whether you have decided on a major, it is a good idea to look into other careers as a plan B. Even if you are passionate about the field of study you have selected, always look into the future.
