South Plains College hosted a grand opening and dedication ceremony for the newly renovated Wilburn and Helen Wheeler Science Center, Friday. The ceremony featured remarks from SPC President Dr. Robin Satterwhite, Bill Wheeler, and David Etheredge, former department chair and retired professor of biology. The renovations of the nearly 30,000 sq. ft. at the science building were made possible through generous donations from Bill and Sandy Wheeler, the Montgomery Family Foundation, and the Helen Jones Foundation.
Bill Wheeler, an alumnus of South Plains College, pledged $7 million through the Wilburn and Helen Wheeler Charitable Foundation to go towards the renovation of the science building. Wilburn Wheeler, Bill Wheeler’s father, was one of the original 19 faculty members at SPC, serving as a math professor and the college’s first band director. His mother, Helen Wheeler, also came to work at the college as a librarian.
Community members from the Levelland area joined with the Wheeler family, along with faculty and staff at South Plains College, Friday, to mark the momentous occasion. The Levelland Area Chamber of Commerce also hosted a ribbon cutting.
