Get ready for the pool!  Registration for summer swim classes at South Plains College begins soon.

The SPC Natatorium will be open this summer for both swim classes and open swim.  SPC Natatorium Director Mike Harrison says anyone can come.

Open swim this summer will be Monday through  Thursday 1:30 – 5 p.m.  Membership rates apply to individuals as well as families.

Swim classes for children ages six and up and adults range from beginning and advanced swimming to springboard diving.   There is an arthritis class which is a stretching, flexibility, and muscle strengthening work-out.  There is also a water aerobics class.   Each class costs $75 to register.  Registration begins May 15 and it’s online

This spring semester a dozen or so SPC students took to the water for beginning and advanced swim classes.  Harrison says students learn all the strokes and how to float.  At the same time, he says advanced students improve their swimming drastically and do lots of laps in class.

“We have some that don’t know how to swim when they get here,” he says.  “And they leave jumping into the deep end and going off the diving board and having a good time.”

The SPC Natatorium is open year- round for lap swimming.  Harrison says swimming, whether it’s laps or in class, is excellent exercise.

“It’s one of the best low impact exercises and best aerobic exercise there is,” he says.

Both beginning and advanced swim classes will be offered again in the fall.
