Fall break, Friday, Oct. 20, might seem like a long way off. But it’s really not if you are the one making sure the shelves at the SPC Food Pantry are stocked and ready to go.
Food pantry organizers say holidays like the fall break, or Labor Day at the start of the semester, are times when students might need extra supplies.

In the pantry, you can find non-perishable items such as soups, pasta, and canned vegetables along with personal hygiene items like shampoo, and body wash.
“We have a little bit of everything,” says Rebecca Canon, Director of Health & Wellness.
The Texan Food Pantry on the Levelland campus is located inside the Health and Wellness Center.

“Students prefer things like pasta, mac & cheese, ramen, and breakfast items
they can grab and go to class like bars and Pop-Tarts,” Canon says.

D’Liesa Burleson, administrative assistant in Health & Wellness, says the pantry always needs supplies. The tricky thing is it’s not consistent when donations might arrive.
“Donations just come in when they come in,” she says. That can make it tough to keep the shelves stocked. People can make donations, whether they are monetary or physical items, through the South Plains College Foundation, or by buying items and dropping them off at the Health & Wellness building. A list of staples that pantry organizers distribute most often is found on the SPC website.

“We love any support,” Canon says. “We are just very appreciative of everything.”
The hours for the Levelland Texan Food Pantry are Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Students can also access it at any time through the online application on the South Plains College website under the Student Services tab.

For more information, contact the SPC Health & Wellness Office: 806-716-2529. The pantry is a free and confidential resource for students.
