Dust off your backpacks and bring out your planners! The spring semester at South Plains College is back in session. Thousands of students at five different SPC campuses started classes Jan. 16.

A new semester can spur a wide variety of emotions.
“Anxious” and “stressful” are how second semester student Raenell Villamor describes the beginning of his semester.
“I’ve gone through the rounds before,” Villamor says. “It’s just that I’m taking more classes than last semester.”
Villamor says being organized and planning ahead may be a key to having a successful semester.
“Stay calm,” he says. “Try and organize your life a little bit and make sure you have all of your ducks in a row.”
It may be easy for students to feel lost in computer chaos, due date schedules, and even finding the right classroom when the semester starts.

To combat stress and anxiety, SPC offers a variety of resources.
“SPC offers a multitude of services such as access to advising, tutoring, counseling, etc.,” says Lola Hernandez, the director of Advising and Testing at SPC. “Take advantage of them!”
Student Nicolas Bazaldua says one word to describe the start of his semester is “busy.” Like many students, he says he works a full-time job in addition to being a student.
“I did it last year and I balanced it pretty well,” says Bazaldua, “but I am taking some harder classes this year. So I think the workload plus the school load is going to be a pretty fun thing to manage.”
Bazaldua says he thinks one key to success is checking email. “From communicating to your professor to getting access to resources, it’s all in the email,” he says.
Oh, and one more big piece of advice from Hernandez: “Go to class!”

Final exam week is May 6 through 9. It may seem like a long way off, but at least there is a spring break.
