It’s a big event with a small name:  iDigi

iDigi is a digital arts festival hosted every year at South Plains College.  This year, just before spring break, well over 150 high school students gathered on the Levelland campus to take part in it.

“It’s probably one of the biggest ones we’ve had,” says Wayne Beadles, SPC Graphic Arts program coordinator and associate professor of graphic arts.

He says high school students from eight high schools submitted just under 250 digital arts contest entries in the festival at the end of February.  Contest categories include Video Creation, Web Design, Music, Digital Art, and Print.

High school contestants crowded into Tom T. Hall on the day of the festival to hear four guest speakers offer advice about the world of graphic art.  This   year’s speakers included Mike Meister, from the Price Group, Rebecca Leal, from UMC’s in-house graphic design unit, Caleb Monroe, from creative agency Monsoon, and Rebecca Beams, from Integrated Access Group.

Wayne Beadles says SPC graphic arts graduating sophomores actually organize and run the festival under the direction of professor advisors.  He says iDigi is the SPC Graphic Arts main recruiting event.

“It’s also a big benefit for our students,” he says, “to get to see the ins and outs of putting on a big even like this- seeing their art work on posters and award presentations.  It all brings value to what they will doing in the real world.”
