The South Plains College Livestock Judging Team recently hosted its annual 4-H and FFA livestock judging contest. The two-legged contestants were children ranging in age from Kindergarten through 12 th grade.
“There was a total of 700 kids competing and 200 adults in attendance,” says Dave Cleavinger, SPC professor of agriculture.
The goal of the contest is for kids to rank animals in the arena 1 through 4. They have to then give reasons why they ranked them in that order.
The animals being judged include steers, heifers, market pigs, breeding pigs, market lambs, breeding lambs, market goats, and breeding goats.
SPC student and member of the livestock judging team Nolan Laminack says he loves to help host the judging contest and loves to see the new recruits for the upcoming fall.
The collegiate judging team gets great exposure from this contest and it’s a fundraiser for its program.
