Students in COMM 1318 Photography 1 got the chance to use the chairs last week and practiced snapping photos of themselves doing it.

SPC has had the chairs for about three years now. Rebecca Canon, SPC’s health and wellness director, says students, staff, and employees are welcome to use the chairs for 30-minute appointments.

“They just come to the front desk,” she says, “and say, ‘Is anybody using those?’, or you can call and make an appointment any time during the day and come on over.”

Canon showed students how to use the chair remote controls. Headsets are also available that allow someone to play a game and “emotionally regulate” at the same time.

“So if you’re nervous when you come in here,” Canon says, “the idea is that your biofeedback will decrease as you use those and the chair.”

The Relaxation Room also comes equipped with manipulatives to keep hands busy.

From the look of it, photography students didn’t want to leave the relaxation room.

“It felt really good,” says Mia Walker.  “Because my lower back, it’s been hurting…and it was hitting the right spots.”

Student Garrett Nowlin also says the chair felt good. “After a long workout it helps all the tension leave my body,” he says.

Student Marley Nix says she could see herself using the chairs in the future. “I can study and just sit in there and be relaxed,” she says.

The Health and Wellness Center is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Canon says some people come in daily to use the Relaxation Room but it’s not used all day.

“We’d love to see whoever would like to walk in,” she says.
