Halloween may be over but where can you still do dissections on a cadaver table, take an owl pellet apart, or handle a snake? In a South Plains College science class.
For a few hours last week, the Wilburn and Helen Wheeler Science Center on the Levelland campus transformed into a spirited maze of activities for Spooky Science Fest 2024.
The whole point of the event, says Kristin Bingham, SPC associate professor and chairperson of the biology department, is to make what happens in the classroom accessible to students who maybe wouldn’t take a face-to-face science.
“We have lots of students who take online sciences,” Bingham says, “and we want to show them how much fun we have doing lab activities.”
This is the third Spooky Science Fest in four years. Organizers conjured up dozens of Halloween themed activities that relate to various science classes.
“There’s DNA, there’s owl pellets, there’s Shrinky Dinks, cadaver table,” Bingham says, “so we’re doing some dissections. We have organs that students are getting hands on with from A & P that we also do in all of our majors’ classes. And we have all of our animals out as well.”
Of course, there was a trivia contest with chances to win SPC swag and lots of candy.
New this year was a pumpkin bread tasting contest. Proceeds from the sale of the entries go to support the science club and the same event next year.
