The South Plains College Natatorium is in the midst of a complete renovation, transforming the longtime facility into what will soon be called the South Plains College Aquatic Center.
Construction costs to date have reached $1.25 million, with the total project expected to come in at approximately $6.9 million. According to Nick Castillo, director of operations at SPC, work is projected to wrap up by May 2026, with classes and student activities expected to resume in the summer session of that year.
When the facility reopens, students can look forward to a host of new features, including:
- Updated shower and restroom facilities with a water softening system;
- A new classroom space for instruction;
- A redesigned pool, featuring a shallow area for basketball, volleyball, and water aerobics, and a deep end with a diving board and climbing wall;
- Modernized equipment, including automated heating and chemical treatment for improved water quality; and
- An advanced air handling system for better moisture and air control.
The project also includes a complete overhaul of the building’s interior and mechanical systems, promising an improved experience for both students and community members.
While a ribbon cutting and grand reopening are planned, dates for those events have not yet been scheduled.
