Laughter and screams of excitement fill the air. High on a sugar rush, kids race from station to station in search of one last piece of candy for their already overflowing buckets.

South Plains College Student Life will host its annual Spooktacular Carnival on Oct. 30 at the Student Center on the Levelland campus from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Families from the community are all welcome to attend this event.
“I guess the big deal is how much candy you can get and that kind of stuff. There’ll be hundreds of little kids come through it, along with all the parents that will come through,” said Robert Perkins, director of student life at South Plains College.
Halloween carnivals have been a tradition at SPC since 2013. Perkins said these events are a way for the college to reach out to the community and showcase South Plains College.
Student clubs and volunteers help pass out candy and set up games. This carnival is an opportunity for children, college students and parents to come together in the same room and celebrate Halloween.
“It’s just about having a little fun… in an environment that hopefully at some point in time, all the young ones in town and the area will go, hey, we want to go back there,” Perkins said.

This is a way for SPC to start showing kids how fun college can be, as well as showcasing the different clubs on campus. Student organizations help set up and run the games for the kids as well as pass out candy.
“The college kids get to help out, and we get to let smaller kids see college life,” said Perkins.
The college keeps safety as one of their main priorities when hosting these events. Perkins emphasizes they want it to be a safe space for kids to trick or treat and be able to play games with other members of the community.
“We host it inside the building so there’s no chance of running out in front of cars…getting a little candy and doing it in a safe environment,” Perkins said.
This family-friendly event has been a way to strengthen the connection between the community with SPC.
