Canadian geese return to Brashear Lake

Canadian geese are arriving in large numbers at Brashear Lake as their annual migration brings them back to the South Plains.

According to SPC biology instructor Kristin Bingham, some geese live in the region year-round, but the biggest flocks appear in late October to take advantage of the area’s milder winters. The birds will remain until March before returning to their northern breeding grounds in Canada.

Two years ago, students in the South Plains College Introductory Wildlife course helped Texas Parks and Wildlife capture and collar several geese at Brashear Lake. Those collars later revealed that some of the birds traveled as far as the Arctic Circle, highlighting the scale of their migration and the value of student research opportunities at SPC.
