Old clothes might ordinarily be thrown away, but one local artist is choosing to repurpose them instead.
Kate Petrin is the multimedia artist behind “Hemlines”, the large art exhibit now on display inside the South Plains College Christine Devitt Fine Arts Center on the Levelland campus.

The exhibit features fabric stretched, stitched, or tied inside at least four window panels inside the main hallway.

Petrin is a recent Texas Tech University graduate who earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Studio Art with a concentration in sculpture.
According to Petrin’s bio and artist statement, which is part of the display, her work explores identity and community through reclaimed textiles.

“My practice honors what is left behind,” she says in her statement, “and redefines waste by giving discarded fabrics and occasionally other cast- off materials a second life as installations and sculptures that preserve memory through color, texture and transformation.”
“Hemlines” will be on display through the end of March.
