South Plains College is holding its fourth annual Groove Day in the Tom T Hall on March 28 starting at 9:30 a.m. The staff encourages students to come and enjoy this free event.
The Creative Arts Program describes it as a day for “celebrating music” and having the ability to “learn directly from the drumming equivalent of a Super Bowl MVP.”
Anyone who enjoys music and jamming out is welcome to join in on the fun. No matter what major they are, the Creative Arts Program wants everyone to come and support.
“Regardless of your discipline, if you’re an English major, Biology major, Communications major, whatever it is,” Dr. Phillip Smith, Director of Percussion at SPC, said.
Omar Hakim will be the guest star performing. He is a drummer who has worked with Madonna, David Bowe, Sting, and so many more.

“Why wouldn’t you want to be in a room with one of the greatest living musicians,” Smith said. “His resume is basically the soundtrack of many people’s lives.”
The fun will begin that morning when doors open at 9:30 a.m. Hakim will start his set and answer questions and then students can work with Hakim and even receive feedback on their techniques. The day will conclude at 4 p.m. with Hakim offering private classes starting at $50.
“As soon as they’re done, they get instant feedback from one of the world’s greatest drummers,” Smith said. “That doesn’t exist anywhere in the world except right here at South Plains College.”
The Live Ensemble No Ballads will also be playing. The band has been together for four semesters and plays anywhere and everywhere, including Jake’s Backroom in Lubbock. Dr. Smith also plays with the ensemble.
“They are pretty much the top ensemble on campus,” Smith said. “They’re the top dogs.”
When the doors open, come in, enjoy the vibes and drums, and most importantly, have a blast.
