They do more than just slow you down at a railroad crossing. The trains you see chugging around Lubbock and Levelland transfer a lot of freight.
The engines and cars you see generally operate through the Lubbock and Western Railway. LBWR has been owned by Watco since 2015.

The Watco site explains the company moves any commodity. And on this railroad, that usually means frac sand, chemicals, fertilizer, grain, animal feed, and oil.
A Watco map shows LBWR has two interconnection points – one with BNSF and another with Union Pacific.

LBWR is a short line railroad. According to the Texas Short Line and Regional Railroad Association short line railroads in Texas employ more than 1,476 people. The TSLRRA reports 379 million tons of freight is moved each year on Texas railroads.
