The recently renovated Aquatic Center at South Plains College is officially open, as of Aug. 31.
Nick Castillo, executive director of administrative services at SPC, said the college invested $6.7 million into the renovation of the facility, which began last year.
Construction on the facility was completed in August, with a ribbon cutting held on Aug. 7 and community and student classes kicking off on Aug. 31.
Ethan Maples has been named the new director of the facility. He currently teaches classes for students and community members Monday through Thursday at the Aquatic Center.
The renovations of the pool on campus came after it was determined the facility, previously known as the Natatorium, was outliving its intended lifespan. The pool was built in the 1970s with a 25-year expectancy. At the time renovations began, the pool was more than 50 years old.
Maples said he hopes that students realize the new, state-of-the-art facility they have access to is a short way down the road.
“All students, whether your in-person or online, you already have a membership,” Maples said. “Come and use this facility.”
