Bokeh Boo:  Spooky season in soft focus

Who says Halloween has to be sharp?  These photos show the spookiest of lights may be ones out of focus.

Students recently set up a photo shoot to practice Bokeh.  Derived from the Japanese word “boke” meaning “blur” or “haze”, Bokeh in photography refers to the aesthetic quality of the out-of-focus or blurry areas in a photograph.

To achieve that pleasing blur, each student had to adjust their camera’s aperture to

control the depth of field.  Christmas lights in the background became bubbles of

light.

The shape of the “bubbles” take on the shape of the camera’s aperture.  So, a cardboard cut- out held in front of the lens offers various fun shapes.

Happy Halloween.
