Dozens of activities, many of them offering something gooey, “icky”, or scary,

were on display at this year’s Spooky Science Fest.

Two-legged, four-legged, and some no-legged creatures gathered for the fun in 20 stations spread across the lobby and study rooms of the Wilburn and Helen Wheeler Science Center.

Several students in attendance said their favorite part of the event was petting the ambassador animals.

Kristin Bingham, SPC associate professor of biology, has been organizing the Spooky Science Fest since 2021.  “Each year we select a new theme and introduce new activities to our festival”, she says.

Last year, she says, they added two 12-foot skeletons to the decorations.

This year’s new activities included a blindfolded bone and skull identification challenge.

“My hope is always that students leave feeling excited about science,” she says, “maybe a little less intimidated, and interested in taking a class in person with someone that is very enthusiastic about what they do.”

Halloween is barely behind us, but planning has already started for next year’s Spooky Science Fest.  Mark your calendars.
